Airway Orthodontics
What is Airway Orthodontics?
At Island Orthodontics, our goal goes well beyond straightening teeth and enhancing appearances. We focus on whole-patient health, particularly when dental crowding or misaligned teeth point to deeper jaw development issues. Such conditions are often connected to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB). Through airway-centered orthodontic treatment, we implement specialized strategies to expand the airway and support better breathing and overall wellness.
Understanding Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB)
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) occurs when airflow is blocked during sleep, causing repeated pauses in breathing. These interruptions trigger the body’s stress response, elevating heart rate and disrupting restful, restorative sleep. Even if a person doesn’t fully awaken, the ongoing disturbances can lead to chronic fatigue, weakened immune function, and reduced cognitive clarity throughout the day.
Typical Warning Signs:
- Snoring or Loud breathing during sleep
- Breathing through the mouth
- Swollen throat tissues/adenoids
- Abnormal facial and jaw structure
- Agitated sleep patterns and excessive tiredness during the day
- Emotional instability
- Brief focus duration or attention deficit disorders
- Nighttime bladder control issues
Contributing Factors:
- Blocking tissues (such as swollen throat structures, crooked nasal passages)
- Inadequate room for proper tongue positioning (including narrow jaw structure, underdeveloped jaw placement, restricted tongue movement)
Optimal Timing for Evaluation and Care
Early evaluation is key. While ages 7–8 are ideal for an initial orthodontic screening, we often welcome children as young as 6 based on referrals from dental professionals. The American Association of Orthodontists also advises scheduling a first check-up around age 7. Contact Island Orthodontics today to schedule a complimentary consultation and learn how airway-focused orthodontic care can support your child’s health and well-being.
